YOU'LL NEED SOME TOOLS!!! In order to fix your Rabbit you will need a few key tools. Most of these tools you will have Around the house, but there are a few that you will need to buy. The tools you need increase with the level of repairs you do. If you need to replace a headlight, or replace a mirror. Thats a simple task. But if you want to Rebuild a motor or replace a cv-boot, your going to have to invest some money.
I will list these tools in phases. 1 and 2 Think of these phases as beginner, intermiedate, and advanced.

Phase 1
Jack, Jack stands, and blocks. --- For raising car to work on the underside.
Flash lights, and drop light. --- So you Can see! (remember to keep drop lights from gas)
Screw Driver Set. --- By set I mean everyone you find in your house
3/8 Socket set, extensions --- Any metric set will do 8mm to 19mm
Pliers, and wire cutters --- Any size
Combination wrench set --- Metric size 8mm to 19mm
Hack Saw --- you'll need this for exhaust work.
So Thats About it for Most repairs. Along the way you may have to Improvise a few
"special tools" to make things easier. I have a couple of pieces for 12x12 wood to jack
my car even higher. And a large flat cardboard box to lay on when I'm down there.
Remember some parts stores now lend tools. This can come in handy when you need
something like a torque wrench, but don't want to spend the $75 bucks it cost to get a
good one.
Phase 2 Don't be Afraid you shouldn't need Air tools. But there sure nice.
|
1/2 inch socket set --- This will set you back a few bucks, but you need
these to do motors, cv-boots, and steering wheels
Allen wrench's --- 5mm,6mm,7mm,8mm will do
Breaker bar --- Gives you extra leverage if you don't have air tools
12pt 8mm Allen wrench --- For removing CV half shafts
Assorted chisels/files/punches --- These are good for removal of rusted nuts/bolts
1/2 inch torque wrench --- you will need this for head jobs, and engine rebuilds
7/8 to 1 1/2 inch wrenches --- These are needed for any A/C work, and oddball stuff
**1/2 inch air gun --- Makes Engine jobs, exhaust work, axle work, suspension work a
LOT easier.
**You can now get cordless battery powered 1/2 inch Impact guns.. And from what I've
heard they work just as well for 1/2 as much.
THERE MAY BE MORE, I CAN'T REMEMBER
To a Person who owns no tools, I say this. Don't run out and buy all this stuff. For most repairs only a very few of these tools will be needed. If you want to get a good starter set, I would start with a phase one tool kit, minus the hack saw and jack stands. You should be able to put it all together for about $25
The rest of Tools should only be bought when there is a need.
