The Dreaded
German Fuse
Box!
Wiring Systems
From Hell!

And How To
Survive
The Gremlins in
your systems.
Test Equipment you'll need, and how to fake it.
This is where many good early Rabbits met there fate. The wiring, and Fuse box
were prone to early failure and a design flaw in the car almost insures that rain
water will find its way into the box.
If you've ever owned a 75 to 80 Rabbit, You know what I mean..
From minor problems like intermittent horns or wipers to more important things
like alternators and head lights.
Well They Can Be beat with A few simple tools, and a bit of deductive reasoning.

Listed below, are the tools you will need to combat the wiring issues Vw rabbits suffer
from. Please Click on the photos to see a short video explaining is uses.
As times goes on I will be adding many more how to videos, This web site is far from built.
I Hope to bring A lot of my rabbit repair knowledge to the masses via this page.
The Test Light.

This is used to verify power is
going where its supposed to
also to test grounds.
YOU MUST HAVE ONE OF
THESE!
They only cost a buck or two.
*I recommend you keep one of
these in your car.*
Digital Multimeter

You will need this to fix the 10%
of problems  the test light can't
cure.
An example is to test for a voltage
drop from the battery to the
starter.
I bought this one for 4.95
at a local flea market.
Jumper Wires
These come in very handy
for jumping power from one
circuit to another. Like
jumping power from the
battery to the horn.
Or to check the cooling fan.
Timing Light
The timing light is necessary
if you want to time your car.
They can be found at sears,
and run from $25-50
Not cheap. You may never
need one of these. Once the
timing is set, it shouldn't
move unless you change the
distributor or get the timing
belt installed wrong.
The Pick
Any will do.
The ones doctors use are
great,
so are the automotive ones.
The point is If you bend a pin
on  coolant temp sender plug,
you can stick this little thing
in there and fix it right up.
GET ONE OF THESE
The Friend or "Remote Starter"
You can pickup a little trigger, a
Remote starter so you can be at
the engine compartment, and
still kick over the motor. But I
have always used a friend, or
just made due without.
If you find one cheap, there not
bad to have.
Great, Now How Do I Use All This Stuff?
So, You went to the parts store,  and got all these goodies to help fix the gremlins in your
rabbit..
Well, Click on the pictures above to see how to use that tool.
So its not so bad.
No obd-2 scan tools needed here!
If you study the wiring diagrams, and use some common sense, you will be
on your way to finding and murdering those nasty gremlins.

If you Want to learn how to use these tools on your rabbit see my info on repairs.
