How To Add Gauges To Your Rabbit.

The standard Vw Rabbit comes up a little short in the engine info area. Don't get me wrong, I think all cars should have the Standard Idiot lights, But I like to be able to monitor the engine temp, as well as alternator output and oil pressure. So I added A few Gauges. I Recommend the Electrical sender gauges over the older and cheaper mechanical type. They are easier to install, and work better. Plus the mechanical ones never seem to fit Vw's metric holes. So What gauges should you have? Water Temp-- Some git's and L models have one. Oil Pressure-- Gti's have Oil temp, But Really need this one. Amp meter, or Voltage meter-- With all the Rabbits wiring faults, it can give you a heads up. Other Gauges You Can Install. Air/fuel ratio-- If your concerned about your rich/lean mixtureconditions, this wil help. Tach-- This is nessesary with a Big stereo system, and a nice upgrade anytime. Oil temp-- Another temp reading to monitor. More for racing. Clock-- Nice old style vdo clock.
Where To Put Your Gauges. If your lucky enough to find a center console for your rabbit, then there you will have holes to mount 2 or 3 Gauges in the upper area. But For the rest of us its a little harder. The two options are this. 1. You can fit 3 standard Gauges into the radio cavity. The Face place can Be cut out of a thick piece of balsa wood. 2. You can Fit 3 Gauges in the ashtray, or center a/c duct. As seen here in my car with a voltmeter, and oil pressure gauge. I made the Mount out of a Cigar box. I cut out the frame, glued it all together with a hot glue gun, and painted it with candy apple red. Look great, and didn't cost me anything. You can find Nice Vdo Gauges for all kinds of things on older 240 Volvo. Don't forget to get the senders!

Here's another Gauge Package I created. This one holds A water temp,Voltage meter, and Oil pressure gauge pack. I also added a bracket so I could install the CB radio I always wanted back in 1991. Again, I used a Nice cigarbox as the Building material, and just mounted the box to the heater box. Be sure to use 1/4 inch screws or less to avoid drilling into the heater core! You can also use this gauge pack box to hold additional switches, Or build one that has a tray for your smokes, sun glasses, or whatever.
