Engine Work How to Fix Your Motor with a minium of tools.

There Are a lot of ways to screw. That is to say, that its all still just screwing, but there are many different ways to get it done. The Same Can Be Said About Engine Repairs, Or Rebuilds. Most pros will Pull the motor to do any large internal repairs, But its not necessary. As Strange as it seems, it is possible to pull the head, and pistons, as well as the rod, and main caps. Only the block, trans, and crankshaft remain. If your car has low oil pressure, and you don't have the $$ for a new or rebuilt motor, you can Drop the oil pan in your driveway, and with a basic socket set, plus a torque wrench, and you'll be on your way to a lower end rebuild in less then a 1/2 day. Step one Get A Set of Main, and Rod Bearings. You'll also need a oil pan gasket, fresh oil, and maybe a oil pump.

Step 1 Jack up car, drain all the oil from engine. Step 2 Remove oil pan. There are a bunch of 10mm bolts remove them all. There are a few That are hard to get at near the transmission bell housing. But They will come out. Step 3 Remove the two 13mm bolts from the oil pump. Clean out the pump screen if you are going to reuse it. Do the same with your oil pan, clean any gunk stuck in the pan bottom. Step 4 Use a 19mm wrench to turn the engine so that 2 on the pistons are at the top, and two at the bottom. Remove the 13mm nuts from the two rods at bottom. Make sure to mark the main and rod caps with numbers lined up with matching sides. Now, getting the bottom of the bearing out is easy, but the top is a trick. The crankshaft is still there. Well, on the pistons, you can push them up a little to relive any pressure its also easy to use a set of feeler gauges to push the top bearing out. Its Easier than it sounds. Most of them just roll right out. Make Sure Everything is put back in the same direction and place as the original! Step 5 Install the Rod, And Main Caps. This is where the torque wrench comes in. The nuts and bolts MUST be at the right amount of "foot pounds" or the motor will self destruct. E-mail me with your motor Id, and I can look it up for you. Or you can find it in any Bentley repair manual. Step 6 Reattach oil pump, and install oil pan. Step 7 Refill oil. Start Car. Thats It. This can cure rod knock, fix a spun bearing, or reclaim lost oil pressure. BUT Its not the right way to do it. That requires measurements, and gauges that I don't recommend you attempt or buy, as there's just to much to mess up or ruin. Trust Me, I do this stuff for a living, and I still manage to ruin things every now and again.
